There are a
number of good books written on the whole
issue of the Church in a post-modern world.
Each of the three pairs of books below
approach the topic from very different view
points...
(If you only
plan on reading ONE book on the subject,
The Emerging Church is probably the most
comprehensive.) |

Systematic and analytical approach...
If you are looking someone to explain what
is going on by studying and comparing the
modern and postmodern worldview and
examining the implications to the church,
these books are for you. Each of these
two are great for us "older folks" to help
us understand what the issues are, and to
see how the church must respond to have a
Kingdom impact on the emerging generation.
I have found both of these to be most helpful and
challenging: The Emerging
Church by Dan Kimball (Zondervan), and
The End of the World ...As We Know It
by Chuck Smith Jr. (WaterBrook Press). |

Discussion set in a fictional story...
These two books by Brian McLaren are like
novels with the characters grappling with
the issues of the church's relevance and
response to the emerging generations.
It's an interesting way to communicate
truth. In the process he does cover
much of the difference between the
worldviews and how we have gotten to where
we are today. The first book is:
A New Kind of Christian and the
sequel is: The Story We Find
Ourselves In. The publisher of
these books is Jossey-Bass. |

Essays from a postmodern...
These books, both by Donald Miller take a
different approach. They are more of a
look inside the heads of postmoderns and
their thought process as they grapple with
religion, church and God. They give my
fellow "moderns" and I a painful look at how
our churches have fallen way short in
answering their questions and ministering to
them in a meaningful way!! These books
are: Blue Like Jazz, and
Searching For God Knows What, both
published by Nelson Books. |
